Evolution of the Digital pigeon : How GPS happened

From sending pigeons and messengers to locating our dear ones through web services, our communication system has moved miles. Technology for communication and information sharing has been changing rapidly, especially with the advent of Internet as a global communication network. From the postal services to telephone & telegram to emails and internet calls, a lot has changed in the way the world communicates.

One such path breaking development along with the internet was the location services powered by GPS technology. The origins of the GPS system was during the run of the Russian satellite SPUTNIK, when scientists discovered that the exact position of the satellite could be correctly found by the study of the radio frequencies due to the Doppler effect (change of radio frequencies due to movements of objects, discovered by Austrian physicist Christian Doppler in 1842).

This technology was further harnessed during World War 2 by USA for military purposes. Finally in the year1960 USA launched the first satellite system "Transit" and in 1978, Navigation System with Timing and Ranging (NAVSTAR) became functional under the Department of Defence. Initially it was only used for military purposes and was not opened to civilian use till as late as 1983.GPS or the Global positioning System is an American system that allows navigation based on satellite communications.

The international giant, Google can hardly be kept out of a discussion on GPS & Navigation for a long time. In 2004 Google Maps was launched as a C++ desktop application providing street views, panoramic views and location services. There on there has been no looking back. The first launch in this system of satellites was in 2013 and the latest launch has been in April 2016, which makes India among the few nations that have their own satellite system for navigation & location services.

IRNSS powers a number of military, emergency, commercial and civilian services and can be accessed by authorised users for many purposes.
